terracotta figures approx 2" tall
Concept: The ceramic figures, created in 2016, represented political figures of that era - archetypes and personifications such as Greed or The Fool, all in the spirit of Commedia dell'arte. Blue holographic counterparts hovering over the actual figures can be seen as spirits, souls, or rarely, a fleeting moral consciousness. The Greek poet Hesiod defined them best for his times and his interpretation still resonates today: "For upon the bounteous earth Zeus has thrice ten thousand Spirits, watchers of mortal men, and these keep watch on judgments and deeds of wrong as they roam, clothed in mist, all over the earth." -Hesiod Works and Days (c. 700 B.C.) |

Facility: The Light Foundry, August Muth. Paintings: acrylic on wood panels 8x8"
Concept: The idea for the hologram Lost Souls came in 2015 from media images of refugees packed into small boats, fleeing war and mankind's inhumanity. Holographic figures, transient and ephemeral, suggest quiet multicolored bodies - perhaps now beyond fear. Originally the hologram was designed to be placed on the floor and viewers stood over it. In this installation, the hologram was wall-mounted with 2 paintings that depicted the chaos of the 2016 U.S. federal elections. |
